#3 and Cervantes

I found an interesting project being conducted by the Texas A&M University, in particular the department of Hispanic Studies and the Center for the Study of Digital Libraries.  They are publishing the works of Cervantes, best know for The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, on the internet in a way that will support multiple search features.  To this end they have decided to us XML and follow the TEI guidelines.  

Unfortunately, they are not currently sharing their code and they seem reluctant to expand upon their strategies and policies for this project.  They do, however, already have a bare bones edition up and running, though not yet including search functions.  They do allow for the user to jump between the chapter.  

What I found most interesting about this project is that they are explicit in their intent to create multiple editions.  I think this is a wonderful mindset to have when embarking on a project like this.  First, it allows that new technologies and conventions will emerge, making the creation of new editions to accommodate these changes.  Secondly, it allows those working on this project a certain amount of freedom.  Knowing that they will put out multiple editions, they don't necessarily need to make compromises that the creation of a single, definitive edition demands.  For example, one editions would almost certainly be in the original Spanish, one might update the language to make it more accessible, and each of these might have both a literal and a more loose translation.  This is to say nothing of any notes or annotations that they may wish to include.
